From the U.S. Regional Association of the International Association for Landscape Ecology web page:
The Award for Distinguished Landscape Ecologist is given for distinguished scientific contribution to the field of landscape ecology. The intent of this award is to specifically recognize those unique individuals whose thinking and writing have helped to shape the field of landscape ecology. This award highlights those scholars whose scientific endeavors pervade our discipline and its continuing development. This award is ordinarily given for outstanding scientific achievement over a period of a decade or more, and it is the most prestigious honor bestowed by our Chapter.
Hargrove's notification letter read:
"As you know, this award is the most prestigious honor bestowed by our society. This was an easy decision for us, based on the strength of your nomination and our personal knowledge of your long-term scientific contributions that have helped to shape the field of landscape ecology."
The award was announced and presented at the Banquet Dinner of the US-IALE Annual Meeting in Baltimore, MD. As Hargrove accepted the award, he said:
"I'm quite sure that no one has ever described any aspect of me ever before using the adjective "distinguished" -- clearly I must have entered some new life-phase or something."
"This group shares a unique belief -- that the most interesting and exciting science comes from the intersecting overlaps in the Venn Diagram ... All of us need to give careful thought and consideration to the future care and feeding of this rare and unusual beast that is US-IALE ... You've given me something that I'll never forget. Thank you all very much."
